EXHIBITION DETAILS AND STATEMENT ON THE WORK I AM PRESENTING FOR THIS GROUP SHOW
I will participate in this group show curated by the Ohio University Student Senate and the Black Student Union to highlight the rich diversity of artistic expression on the Athens campus. This exhibition brings together faculty and students whose work delves into the complex narratives and vibrant cultures that shape their backgrounds, offering insight into the inspirations behind their creations.
For this show, I am exhibiting my painting Girl in a Blue Hijab in its frame for the first time. This work, which I created using charcoal, graphite pencil, and acrylic, portrays a young girl engaged in menial income-generating activities on the streets of Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti region of Ghana.
The painting celebrates the girl's femininity by carefully blending tones on her face to achieve a sfumato effect. At the same time, the vibrant colors make her stand out against the background, elevating her to iconic status.
