FIGURE DRAWING

This page features selected artwork created by students in my Figure Drawing class at Ohio University.

Project 1: Gesture Drawings

Project Description: We explore the human form beyond mere representation to examine its swift, dynamic movements. Participants will create rapid, expressive line works using their understanding of anatomy and proportions. Utilizing vine charcoal on newsprint paper is recommended for this exercise, allowing for a nuanced and responsive approach to the medium. The deliberate exclusion of an eraser encourages a commitment to each stroke, fostering a mastery of precision and spontaneity.

Project 2: Portraiture and Face Structure

Project Description: In this project, students embark on an insightful exploration of the intricacies inherent in portrait drawing. Our focus will center on a study of the diverse planes and proportions characterizing the human face. Students will investigate the complexities of rendering faces from various perspectives, including the effect facial direction has on visual perception. Students can use traditional dry and wet media or digital drawing modalities.

Project 3: Light and Shadow Workshop

Project Description: This project meticulously examines the interplay of light on the diverse shapes constituting the human figure. Each figure is composed of distinct patches of value, and our focus will be on methodically understanding and rendering these nuanced variations. The process involves initially blocking out general values and progressively refining them with heightened precision.

Project 4: Hands and Feet Drawing

Project Description: Learners embark on a focused and challenging exploration of the intricacies of depicting hands and feet in this project. Recognized as among the most nuanced aspects of the human form, mastering the various gestures these extremities can exhibit requires dedicated practice. We will delve into an in-depth study of hands and feet, recognizing their unique anatomical characteristics. Through hands-on exercises, students sketch their own hands from multiple angles. Additionally, the class will draw a model's feet, providing an opportunity for collective learning and observation.

Project 5: Mark Making techniques

Project Description: In this comprehensive study, we will explore a myriad of mark-making techniques, challenging the conventional notion that the excellence of art is contingent upon seamless shading. Our focus will encompass an extensive examination of various line shading methodologies, incorporating hatching, cross-hatching, crisscrossing, and scribbling. Students can use all types of drawing media.

Project 6: Mixed-Media techniques

Project Description: Having delved into anatomy, gesture drawings, portraiture, and the intricacies of depicting hands and feet, we now transition into mixed-media. Elevating our expertise, we will integrate multiple media into a single artwork. Our subjects will range from self-portraits to depictions of colleagues, models, and reference images. This comprehensive exploration allows combining wet and dry media with diverse materials, such as fabrics.

Project 7: Unnatural light

Project Description: In this project, We will use colored media exclusively and capture subjects in extended poses for our artistic endeavors. Observing from live and reference images, we will depict unconventional light hues surrounding our models. The rendering process will incorporate bright colors for highlights. The overarching objective of this project is to gain insights into the impact of light on color. Students are encouraged to explore oil pastels or colored pencils on colored pastel paper. Additionally, digital drawing modalities are also accepted.
